Why Is This Practice So Powerful?
If you have never tried Kundalini you will notice after only 90 seconds of breath work your entire mind and body feel different, calm and energized. Yogis understand this as aligned. This practice views the physical body as the vehicle and vessel of the Soul Body. By using breath, sound and movement, the practice engages and affects the nervous and glandular systems to support the Soul Identity emerging, up the spine, out the crown and into your daily life. Some Souls have been waiting millions of lifetimes for this moment, so no wonder it feels magical, so fast…your arrival at your Kundalini experience has been a long time in the making!
Where Did Kundalini Come From?
All yoga has its origins in the work of the ancient yogis who spent their lives observing the fluctuations of energy and the effects of different activities behind closed eyes. The yogic system started out with mantra or a coded sound that created a desired effect, breath work and movement. Over time, the holistic system became diluted into different techniques and then schools (i.e. some just had mantra, some just had movement, etc.). This led to 22 schools of yoga at the time the Yoga Sutras were written by Patanjali circa 200 A.D.
All the schools of yoga have a purpose. Kundalini yoga retained all the “facets” of the original system: mantra, meditation, breath work and movement for one purpose…to ignite the Soul Body and have it rise up the spine and into our lives. The yogis call this “Jiwanmukt” (the experience of a liberated Soul while living). The system I practice is Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan—the man that first brought this practice to the West in 1969.
What Should I Expect from a Practice With Sheel Experience?
These experiences are based on my weekly classes I teach in La Jolla to mostly women, 30-60 years old, with a lot of stress and a lot of love and beauty in their lives as well. I know how hard it is to make time to meditate and exercise, so I maximize the experience to release stress, connect with Spirit, and increase capacity for joy. I also like to use the classes to (at least in a subtle way) rhythmically release self-destructive habits.
The classes begin with a tune in mantra that connects us with the Yogi Scientists that figured out how these simple moves with breath raised the consciousness to connect with the Universal Pulse. Then we warm up and breathe and move into a kriya or a particular recipe of movement and breath and meditation for a desired result that I go into further detail on in the accompanying blog post. We end with an optional gong bath. If you are busy and can’t stay for the gong bath, please lie down for at least 90 seconds so that the benefits of the practice can be delivered throughout your physical body, energy bodies, and all nine feet of your electromagnetic field.

What If I Am Pregnant?
Please always check with your physician before doing anything physical. These practices are generally safe for pregnancy but some things should be avoided like pulling up the Root Lock (navel coming in towards spine), breath of fire, holding the breath, shoulder stand, lying on the back past the second trimester, doing anything that makes you out of breath, and pushing yourself beyond anything that is comfortable. Listen to your body and don’t stress about the directions.
I began practicing Kundalini while pregnant and I loved the way it connected me with the Soul of my daughter. My meditations were aimed at cleaning her karma before she arrived, and letting her know how loved she was already. Even just listening to mantras or walking and listening to mantras while pregnant can be so healing and help with any new-mom anxiety.
Will Kundalini Make Me Skinnier?
It can. (I am not going to sugar coat this.) Here is how: practicing Kundalini develops your intuition so that the healthy messages that were too quiet to hear become louder and then become your actions. Kundalini also works with the ether element—the yogi’s favorite element. It lets what we need or want “float” to us, rather than us having to chase it. So, if you want to lose weight, doing these practices regularly will support you making healthier choices and send you the wisdom you need to slim down your waistline—whether it is a book, a diet, a supplement, a doctor, or a life change without you having to stress about it. Also, all the breathing supports your body and organs to work more effectively, so that less energy is wasted on fighting with yourself and more energy can be spent taking care of yourself. Lastly, Kundalini makes you radiant. This means that your energy becomes attractive to others and that is reflected back to you…so you feel skinnier. (I am not a doctor, this is based on what I have learned from studying and practicing Kundalini. Full Disclosure: Kundalini helped me lose my baby weight—definitely.)
