Sat Nam Goddesses,
This New Moon Virgo is a little different than other New Moons. Instead of planting seeds of intentions like a usual New Moon, the sign of Virgo means that we would be best served to harvest seeds of wisdom, and gather our energies and life force—by letting go. Loyalty is a wonderful quality, for sure, but it can undermine our sense of grace when we don’t honor a fading interest in relationships and situations that have completed their cycles and now have a diminishing return in terms of our creative growth and Soul’s emergence in our daily lives.
When is the last time you let go of a job, a relationship or an expectation without a fight? How strong is the programming that a “good” person and a “loyal” person do not “throw in the towel” on people, places and things? In these moments, more than ever, a strong intuition is needed to navigate these murky waters where our auras are sensitive to judgment and old ideas that may keep us in the Realm of Karma.
When I had my kundalini yoga studio, I created it in gratitude for these teachings and for this way of life. I employed graduates of various kundalini teacher trainings who would not have otherwise had a place to teach. I invited many “names” in the global kundalini community to have events—almost all of whom had never had San Diego on their radar to visit (even though Kundalini’s birth in the West was up the road in Los Angeles!).
I thought, this is how I show gratitude and show up for these teachings in way that matches how these teachings have showed up for me! My marketing plan was to educate the local La Jolla community about Kundalini since many had never heard of this kind of yoga. (Someone actually asked me if it was a type of pasta!) It felt nice to have a calling and a way to honor that calling, you know?
My signature class was titled “The Guru Is You,” in deference to what I saw was a core teaching of Kundalini: that all this meditation and these practices were here to wake up a connection to my True Identity and the whispered guidance from within so that I didn’t need to keep looking outside myself to find out if I was “right” or “wrong.”
However, over time, I started to realize that managing teachers and expending energy negotiating contracts to host all these well-known names in the Kundalini world was starting to feel like I was sending energy the wrong way—OUT instead of IN. There is an overwhelming attitude in the Kundalini community that because the teachings are so special and sacred, no one wants to roll up their sleeves and build communities and serve the mission of Yogi Bhajan outside the already existing hot spots like Los Angeles and New Mexico. I kept finding myself dishonoring my intuition which said the sacredness is in the serving of the teachings, not serving teachers…
Even worse! I realized that I was not giving a true value to the incredible raw material of the beautiful Souls that were already here in my community. Instead of paying attention to the title of my class, I was inadvertently sending the message that yeah the Guru Is You, but we need these people to come in from other areas and tell us how to dress and feel first…then, ok you can connect with the Guru inside. I was wrong.
It’s like that part at the end of the Wizard of Oz when Glinda tells Dorothy,
“You’ve always had the power, my dear.”
The connection was always there and alive and well. All we ever needed was to breathe together to ignite and uncoil the kundalini serpent up our spines.
YB used to say, learn a kriya, then teach a kriya, and he always stressed the importance of a daily practice to flow through you if you teach kundalini. That’s it. The teacher trainings, the White Tantric and other gatherings, the workshops—all wonderful, don’t get me wrong (who doesn’t love staring into someone’s eyes for 10 hours and experiencing 10 years of meditation in one day?!), but in terms of what you need to have Kundalini energy flowing in your life, they are not necessary.
And so, whether you are in La Jolla, San Diego or elsewhere reading this. My bottom line this New Moon is to tell you that you don’t need me, you don’t need any special training, or a type of dress or superstar Kundalini teacher to connect with the most powerful and beautiful wisdom of the Universe, or to understand the most basic question of who you are and why you are here and to become a beacon of light and LOVE in your present reality.
All you need is a sincere heart, a curiosity of Self, an inhale upon which you layer on “Sat,” and an exhale upon which you send out “Nam. Harvest this wisdom and vibration from each breath and the most powerful teachers and teachings of the planet will come to serve YOU.
As for the next step: Open your eyes and fall in LOVE with the people, places and things right in front of you—exactly the way the are—for the most blissed out day ever. Every day.
Happy New Moon!
